Frequently asked questions
Short, direct answers about setup, privacy, teams and phones.
Getting started
What is TillSync?
TillSync is a payments feed for businesses that accept M-Pesa Till payments in Kenya. It reads the M-Pesa confirmation SMS on your Till phone and shows each payment live to you and your attendants, along with who made each sale.
How does TillSync work?
You install TillSync on the Android phone that holds your Till SIM and allow SMS access. Each M-Pesa receipt that phone gets is passed to your business and appears within seconds on every team member’s phone and on the web dashboard.
Do I need Safaricom’s Daraja API or any integration?
No. TillSync works from the confirmation SMS your Till phone already receives, so there is nothing to apply for and nothing to integrate with Safaricom.
How do I set up my Till phone?
Install TillSync on the Android phone that holds your Till SIM, sign in, and allow three things: SMS access, the running notice, and an “Unrestricted” battery setting. Then turn on Forward payments. The How it works page walks through each step.
Can I use my own phone as the Till phone?
Yes, if it is an Android phone that holds the Till SIM. A separate Till phone is the most reliable setup, because it stays switched on at the counter.
How do I add an attendant?
The attendant creates a TillSync account and sends you their account ID from the Welcome screen. You add them under Team, choose what they can see, and they can sign in straight away. You can remove their access just as quickly.
Privacy and security
Can my attendants see my M-Pesa balance?
No. The original M-Pesa message, which contains your balance, is hidden from attendants unless you choose to allow it. They see the amount, code, time, payer name and the masked phone number.
Does TillSync read my text messages?
No. TillSync only asks Android to tell it when a new SMS arrives. It never asks to read your inbox or your old messages, and it ignores any message that is not from M-Pesa.
Who can see what?
Attendants see the amount, M-Pesa code, time, payer name and the masked phone number, for the last 24 hours. Owners see everything, including the original message, older payments, the team and devices. You can grant an attendant the original message or older payments individually.
Are permissions enforced, or just hidden on screen?
Enforced. What each person can read is checked on the server for every request, so a hidden screen is never the only thing protecting your data.
Teams and sales
How do attendants claim sales?
When a payment arrives, the attendant who served the customer taps Claim and confirms. The sale then counts toward their total for the day. The first claim wins, anyone can undo their own, and the owner can assign, change or remove any claim.
What if two attendants claim the same sale?
The first claim wins and the second person is told it was already claimed. Nothing is counted twice. If a claim is wrong, its owner can undo it, or you can reassign it.
Can I see how much each attendant sold?
Yes. As the owner you see sales by person for today, with the payments nobody has claimed listed separately so they are never lost. You can also export payments to CSV, including who made each sale.
Phones and downloads
Which phones do I need?
The Till phone must be an Android phone with your Till SIM, because Android lets an app be told when an SMS arrives. Everyone else can use the Android app, and owners and attendants can also use the web dashboard in any browser.
Which Android versions are supported?
TillSync needs Android 7.0 or newer.
Is TillSync on Google Play?
Not yet. For now you install the Android app from the Download page. The web dashboard needs no install and works in any browser.
Does it work on an iPhone?
The Till phone must be Android, because iPhones do not let apps be told when an SMS arrives. Owners and attendants can still use the web dashboard from an iPhone.
Reliability
What if the internet drops?
The Till phone keeps the messages it receives and sends them as soon as it is back online, so nothing is lost. Your team sees the payments when they arrive.
What happens if the Till phone stops working?
If the Till phone stops reporting for a few minutes, TillSync shows “Till not reporting” to your team, so you know totals may be missing payments until it is back.
What if a message is not recognised?
TillSync reads standard M-Pesa “money received” confirmations. If a message does not clearly show an amount, it is not recorded rather than guessed, so your totals only contain amounts that were really in a message.
Does TillSync move money or verify payments?
No. TillSync counts the M-Pesa confirmation messages received on your Till phone. It does not process payments or hold money, and your M-Pesa statement stays the source of truth for large payments.
Ready for a more connected counter?
Create your business, connect the Android phone that holds your Till SIM, and bring your team in.
